Cathedral Quarter is well known for its culinary class. The area boasts a range of top-class eateries that are already renowned throughout Belfast and further afield.

But did you know that there’s a ‘new kid on the block’?

The Academy is a great new restaurant that offers a contemporary dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere. What sets it apart, however, is that it is staffed by students from Ulster University’s Business School!

Located within the York Street campus of the university, The Academy’s floor to ceiling windows provide panoramic views of St Anne’s Cathedral and Cathedral Gardens, so you’re not only guaranteed great food – you’re able to enjoy it in a great setting with great views!

The students – who are all studying the BSc Hons degrees in Culinary Arts Management and International Hospitality Management – offer a menu that’s not only full of local, high-quality food and produce – Carnbrooke Mourne lamb, Kilkeel mussels and Kilmegan cider – but which offers culinary creativity.

A three-course lunch at The Academy only costs around £16 (although you can have one or two courses as well), so you can enjoy a wide range of delicious dishes without breaking the bank.

On offer are starters such as lime and smoked paprika infused prawns with toasted focaccia or smoked chicken with oriental style quinoa and a chilli and roast pepper coulis, before feasting on mains such as sautéed breast of chicken with orzo, tomato and chorizo and a basil cream or spiced lamb burger, tomato, red onion and herb feta, brioche bap with sea salt and rosemary chips. When it comes to desserts, you will be torn between white chocolate mousse, raspberry coulis and pistachio shortbread or Limoncello brûlée with lavender meringues and soft berries.

Throughout October, November and December you can enjoy the Gourmet Experience on a Tuesday night where a six-course tasting menu of contemporary, innovative food is available for an impressive £25, while on Thursday evenings you can take a culinary journey around the Southern states of America.

During term time the restaurant is open for lunch on weekdays from 12.30pm and dinner is served on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.00pm.

CQ BID manager, Gareth Neill, believes that The Academy adds an extra dimension to dining in the Cathedral Quarter.

“Despite the fact that the Cathedral Quarter is already home to a great range of restaurants, I firmly believe that The Academy offers something innovative and fresh. In addition to the fact that patrons are able to enjoy high quality and authentic food with memorable service, they’re also supporting the next generation of culinary and hospitality leaders, so it’ s a win-win for everyone and, most importantly, for the Cathedral Quarter in general.”
