After months of preparation, The Merchant Hotel’s Christmas celebrations officially begin today (Friday 29th November) with the arrival of its iconic 25ft Christmas tree.  Standing tall in all its festive finery amidst the splendour of The Great Room Restaurant, the impressive tree was transformed overnight by a team of Merchant elves.

This year, the hotel’s highly anticipated Christmas theme is based around traditional Victorian teddy bears, inspired by the original Steiff-style teddies. There will be 54 vintage and antique bears used in total, with the majority adorning its Christmas tree.  Elsewhere, decorations include luxury Victorian baubles, delicate gold sprigs, rose-hips, berries and woodland ferns, while a traditional colour-scheme of red and gold interspersed with teddy-bear brown will nod to the hotel’s Victorian heritage.

Teddy bears have been placed lovingly underneath Christmas trees for generations bringing delight to little faces around the world. Traditionally given as gifts, they are a symbol of love and loyalty. This year, The Merchant Hotel is launching its very own range of cuddly teddy bears, complete with a custom-made Merchant dressing gown. A £5 donation from the sale of each Merchant teddy bear will go towards its charity of the year, PIPS.

Commenting on the unveiling of The Merchant’s Christmas theme, Gavin Carroll, general manager said“We’re proud to unveil our festive theme for 2019; this is a magical time at The Merchant. Every year, we challenge ourselves to delight and surprise our guests, creating a special setting where treasured memories can be made.

“This year’s theme taps into the quintessential Victorian Christmas, evoking emotive memories of youth and we hope that our teddy bear theme will help to create lasting memories for our guests. We’re also proud to partner with PIPs on the launch of our new Merchant bear, which we hope will make a real difference to local people in need this Christmas.”

To mark the official launch of Christmas at The Merchant Hotel, operatic singer Ceara Graham and The Ireland String Quartet will perform traditional festive favourites on Saturday 30th November at the first Festive Afternoon Tea of the season. For the month of December, guests can enjoy an elegant afternoon tea with a festive twist with live music daily from 12.30pm until 4.30pm.

Elsewhere, The Merchant offers the perfect setting to enjoy the festivities of the holiday season, from spectacular banquets to cosy lunches.

For festive drinks, choose from award-winning cocktails by the fireside in The Cocktail Bar or Berts Jazz Bar. For an Irish coffee with a twist, The Cloth Ear is teaming up with Bán Poitín for the exclusive launch of the Belfast Coffee this December. Featuring the infamous Irish spirit poitín, cold brew coffee, fresh cream and grated nutmeg, it’s perfect for espresso martini lovers. A range of luxury spiked hot chocolates are also being added to the menu, with a choice of vodka, rum, cointreau, crème de menthe, Tia Maria or brandy, along with fresh cream and a range of tasty toppings.
