CQT Announce Cancellation of Culture Night Belfast

The Cathedral Quarter Trust (CQT), the charity behind the delivery of Belfast’s annual Culture Night, has today announced the cancellation of this year’s event, originally scheduled for September 18th 2020.

Susan Picken, Director of the Cathedral Quarter Trust said,

“September 18th 2020 would have seen the twelfth edition of Culture Night Belfast, which has grown over the years into the city’s largest free cultural celebration. Last year’s event, which saw Culture Night expand across two days with the addition of Culture Day, brought over 100,000 people to the city centre to enjoy a vibrant, diverse cultural experience.

We have thought long and hard about the possibilities of holding Culture Night Belfast 2020 in September and have decided that, much to our regret, it won’t be possible this year. We know Culture Night is a highlight of the year for many people and we hate to disappoint them but given the uncertainty of the current situation, and putting public health and well-being first, we believe this is the best course of action to take.

We are exploring other possibilities, including an online celebration of Culture Night in September, and will issue more information as our plans develop. We hope to see you all in 2021 and in the meantime stay safe and well and enjoy the wealth of our local arts and culture available online.”

Anne McReynolds, Chair of Cathedral Quarter Trust and Chief Executive of the MAC commented,

“This is a time of unprecedented challenge for all of us in Northern Ireland. Every part of civic society has been impacted by the pandemic including the arts sector. Events like Culture Night are a hugely important part of our cultural lives and the continued support of our audiences and partners will be critical in the coming months.”
