Grammy award-winning Irish-American Aoife O’Donnavan songwriter and musician will play the Black Box on Sunday 5th June at 8PM.

Artist Aoife O’Donnavan, best known as lead singer of Crooked Still, will play Cathedral Quarter’s Black Box, doors open from 7:30PM.

As co-founder of female folk trio band I’m With Her, lead singer of string band Crooked Still and with the release of 3 critically-acclaimed solo albums, Fossils, In the Magic Hour and Man in a Neon Coat: Live from Cambridge Aoife’s music career has skyrocketed and she has just announced a UK tour.

Aoife O’Donnovan spent her childhood in Massachusetts with summers singing songs with family in the South of Ireland which inspired her to study at the New England Conservatory of Music and to later form the band Crooked Still with musicians Gregory Liszt on banjo, Corey DiMario on bass, Tristan Clarridge on cello and Brittany Hass on fiddle.

Crooked Still has been together for an exciting 10 years and most recently had songs featured in The Last of Us Part II gameplay trailer and soundtrack.

In 2011, Crooked Still took a break to allow the band members to pursue individual music projects, allowing Aoife to sign a deal with Yep Roc Records and release her first solo album In the Magic Hour.

Since then, Aoife O’Donnovan has been a guest vocalist on the 2013 grammy, toured with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz and released the album Age of Apathy in January 2022, her first solo album in 5 years.

She said: “I think there is just something about being on the road and being fully on your own, like travelling actually by yourself which I don’t do that often anymore. I love the mystery and adventures you can have by yourself because when you travel alone you have more chance encounters. ”

Age of Apathy, featuring artists Allison Russell and Madison Cunningham was produced remotely during the pandemic and captures the human experience of feeling disconnected from the world and wanting to find escape. The selection of songs on the album are soothing, heartfelt and tell a story, songs ‘What Do You Want fFrom Yourself’, ‘Town of Mercy’ and ‘Age of Anxiety’ are worth noting. Aoife explains,

“When I stepped aside from Crooked Still when the band took a break in 2011, that is when I made my first solo album, and I’m really glad I did because it gave me a chance to do my own original music and be out there on my own. I think I will always do both, I will always have my solo stuff as well as other collaborations I am working on. ”
