Customs House

Customs House

The Customs House is an imposing Victorian building, designed by the architect Charles Lanyon, made possible and necessary as Belfast became one of the great industrial and trading centres of the Victorian United Kingdom.

It enshrines Britannia (with her trident and Royal shield), Neptune (with his anchor and dolphin) and Mercury (with a sheaf of corn at his feet) in its sculptured pediment.

These days the building overlooks Custom House Square, a vast open space which plays host to many outdoor festivals and events throughout the year including Belsonic and selected events from the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival.
